Side effects of marrying a computer guy

20 Aug

Don’t tell Bobbi, but she’s marrying a computer guy.

She might be too late now, but for all of you people that are considering marrying one, please consider the following:

  • All electronic devices in the house will be, in one way or another, synchronized to an NTP server.
  • You will need to start using a 24-hour clock, or, depending on the severity of the geekness, learn to read UNIX time.
  • There will be no discussion about whether taking one road, or another is better. That’s what Google Maps is for.
  • Along with the marriage license, you might be asked to sign an Acceptable Use Policy form.
  • If both of you have cellphones, having a landline makes no sense. If anything, you will have to settle for a VoIP line, which might or might not run through an Asterisk box.
    • In the event that you do have a landline, then be prepared to have 12-character long voicemail passwords.
  • Turning the lights on and off might not be a matter of flipping a switch, since it’s a lot cooler to do it with an X10-enabled remote control (that will also control the movie you’re streaming from your NAS box to your Wii.)
  • If it’s not in Google Calendar, it will not happen.
  • You will receive gifts, but most of them will come from thinkgeek.com, ebay, or in the form of free computer upgrades (“Happy birthday! I got you more RAM!”)
  • Any rumours you hear, will first be checked against the snopes.com list of hoaxes.
  • The only cats you’re allowed to have in the house are LOLCATS.
  • “Let’s ask Twitter” is a reasonable way to end an argument.

Can you think of any more? Let me know in the comments!

@Oscar – Request an RFQ from Smarthome, and submit it to Cindy.

@Angel – RFQ was submitted to the board of directors (Oscar and Cindy) but capital funds were not available for this project. Deferred until further notice.

I bought step 1 for this project though…. Insteon capable Harmony remote!

Google maps?? I thought you had a GPS instead! Or at least a smartphone (iPhone preferred, since I got my Macbook I am a Mac girl) :P

@Michelle – Good point. We do have a GPS, but I find it easier to look up two addresses, and then drag the suggested route around.

Also, iPhone? *jealousy waves* sent your way.
